SAN DIEGO, CA – Employment prospects for all ages are the bleakest they have been since the “Great Depression.” Despite federal jobs program incentives to states and businesses, companies are just not hiring. Hiring for the holiday season is much slower than previous years and will only provide a trickle of permanent jobs.
The current jobless rate is hovering around 10% on average across the nation according to NCLS (National Conference on State Legislatures). Alabama boasted the largest reduction in unemployment in October — unemployment dropped 1.9% to 9.8%. This is a marginal improvement compared to an unemployment rate of 4 percent two years ago. The number of business closings in Alabama is slowly but surely eating away the gains in employment.College graduates who are unable to find employment are estimated at nine percent. This is the highest unemployment rate for recent college graduates in twenty-five years according to The Economic Policy Institute. The employment picture for older workers is no better. Having exhausted their second round of unemployment benefits, many middle-aged workers have given up on even obtaining a Mac Job in the near or distant future. Now they have to compete with young college grads as well.

State governments are not hiring because tax revenue has decreased due to unemployment. Every state is expecting a bailout from the Federal Government and they have gotten it. The great growth in jobs from stimulus money has not materialized nor is it likely to in the short term.
